US-American songwriter David Rovics to perform at IAF2013

Acclaimed political songwriter David Rovics will perform at a republican function on Friday, June 14, as part of the Irish Anti-Imperialist Forum 2013. The concert will be held at the Orient Pub, Springfield Road, Belfast. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are available at the IAF2013 and on the night.

David Rovics is a well-known political songwriter from the United States and members of the Wobblies-Trade Union, the International Workers of the World. He is currently touring Europe and will perform at the Irish Anti-Imperialist Forum 2013. Earlier this year David Rovics released his record “Everything Can Change”. His music concerns topical subjects such as the 2003 Iraq war, anti-globalization and social justice issues. He is also known for his song on the Occupy Protests, released in 2011. David Rovics’ lyrics are in the tradition of classic US-American protest songwriters such as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs and Joan Baez.

On his website, David Rovics writes he “grew up in a family of classical musicians in Wilton, Connecticut, and became a fan of populist regimes early on. By the early 1990's he was a full-time busker in the Boston subways and by the mid-1990's he was traveling the world as a professional flat-picking rabble-rouser. These days David lives in Portland, Oregon and tours regularly on four continents, playing for audiences large and small at cafes, pubs, universities, churches, union halls and protest rallies. He has shared the stage with a veritable who's who of the left in two dozen countries, and has had his music featured on Democracy Now!, BBC, Al-Jazeera and other networks. His essays are published regularly on CounterPunch and elsewhere, and the 200+ songs he makes available for free on the web have been downloaded more than a million times. Most importantly, he's really good. He will make you laugh, he will make you cry, he will make the revolution irresistible.”
