Friday, 24 January 2014 10:14

Employees at the Tyndall National Institute in Cork staged a picket outside their workplace Tuesday over a gap of 10-20 percent between their pay and that of their colleagues in University College Cork (UCC).

The UCC has claimed the industrial action poses a “significant financial and reputational risk to what is an important regional and national asset.” The picket, organised by SIPTU, was joined by a number of colleagues from the Irish Federation of University Teachers.

Irish agricultural officers to begin industrial action PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 17 January 2014 09:48

Around 600 technical agricultural officers employed by the Department of Agriculture in Ireland, are due to begin industrial action Monday. They are members of the Impact trade union.

Initially the action will take the form of a work to rule, which includes staff only reporting through existing line management. It is in response to management refusing to let agricultural officers have the opportunity to apply for assistant principal posts. According to Impact, the industrial action will eventually lead to delays in grant payments and disruption to the export of agricultural products including livestock.

Martin Corey released PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 16 January 2014 16:03

The release of long-term republican prisoner of conscience Martin Corey took place earlier today. While the circumstances of the process remain unclear at this time, the Martin Corey Campaign has confirmed and welcomed his release in the following statement.

"Finally after nearly four years internment, Martin Corey was released from Maghaberry jail, Co Antrim on January 15th, 2014. Martin was interned on secret evidence gathered by secret police and held without a charge or trial since April 2010. The British government, secretary of state and all those involved in the internment of Martin Corey showed contempt for human rights and were involved in a despotic policy of ruling by decree.

"We would like to thank everyone who was involved in the Release Martin Corey Campaign, Republican Sinn Fein, the countless activists who stood on picket lines and those who went to jail themselves to highlight Martin's case. We take this opportunity to welcome Martin home and wish him the best of luck in the future."

Irish doctors strike

Junior doctors carried out a one-day strike Tuesday at all of the Republic of Ireland’s public hospitals against dangerously long hours and budget cuts. It was the first such action in 25 years by doctors. Pay and pension cuts have been imposed on more than 300,000 public-sector workers since Ireland’s bankers and corporations were bailed out by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. About 3,000 junior doctors took part, with non-emergency procedures affected, and leading to 3,000 postponed operations and the deferring of 12,000 out-patient appointments.

Irish doctors set for action PDF Print E-mail

Junior doctors represented by the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) have voted to strike beginning September 25 after a ballot of around 1,000 junior doctors produced a 97 percent vote in favour of industrial action over working hours.

The doctors’ grievance is over the fact they are working around 100 hours a week—more than twice the legal maximum. Talks between the IMO and Health Service representatives broke down at the end of last week prompting the ballot and planned strike action. (wsws)
