Unions and management in talks at unresolved Dublin Bus dispute PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 10 August 2013 14:35

Unions and management at Dublin Bus are engaged in talks at the Labour Court regarding a dispute over an €11.7 million cost-saving programme that led to an all-out strike at the company this week.

In the face of declining funding from the 26 County Administration at Leinster House, increased fuel costs, and falling passenger revenues, Dublin Bus wants to implement restructuring. Following the intervention of the Labour Court on Tuesday, bus services recommenced in the capital Wednesday. The two unions involved in the dispute suspended the strike once they were invited to talks. Union organiser Willie Noone welcomed the Labour Court move and said the dispute would be resolved only through negotiation and discussion. In May, the employers’ group Ibec called on the government to change the law to stop strikes causing disruption to key public services. (wsws/irc)

Michael Campbell & the EU Presidency: Lithuanian hypocrisy PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 29 July 2013 20:27

On July 1, Lithuania has taken the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from the 26 Counties Administration in Dublin for the coming twelve months. On this day, the programme of the Lithuanian EU-Presidency has been published in Brussels. Referring to the illegal treatment of republican prisoner Michael Campbell and the inhumane treatment in prison, Republican Sinn Féin International Spokesperson Dieter Blumenfeld called the programme of the Lithuanian EU-Presidency as “pure hypocrisy”.

The programme of the Lithuanian EU-Presidency vows to safeguard “that the EU institutions remain active in their protection of fundamental human rights both within the EU and abroad“. The programme continues: “Regarding the Southern neighbourhood, Lithuania will support the EU focus on more effective implementation of the European Neighbourhood Policy aiming at promoting democracy and inclusive and sustainable growth, based on promotion of human rights, especially the equal rights and freedoms of women, as well as closer cooperation with civil society.“ Furthermore the documents claims: “The EU is ready to take on leadership in protecting human rights.

The chapter D “Justice and Home Affairs” starts with: “The Council dedicates particular attention to the protection of interests and the needs of citizens and other EU residents, in order to ensure respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms.

RSF: Hezbollah no ‘terrorist’ organisation! PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 27 July 2013 11:15

The blacklisting of Hezbollah as a ‘terrorist organisation’ by the EU has been condemned by Republican Sinn Féin. In a statement RSF International Spokesperson Dieter Blumenfeld said by putting Hezbollah on the EU-terrorlist, the EU-members once again follow the US-Israel-agenda in the Middle East and blocking the way for a democratic and federal solution of the conflicts in Lebanon, Syria and the Middle East.

In a statement issued to media outlets in Europe on July 27, Dieter Blumenfeld, International Spokesperson of Republican Sinn Féin said: “Hezbollah is no terrorist organisation but a legitimate peoples movement. They play both an important social role in Lebanon and a very progressive role in defending the Arabic people and the minorities against Imperialist and Zionist aggression. The huge support the get from the people in Lebanon, Syria and all over the Arabic world proves their analyses and politics as correctly.

Notenbank senkt Prognose PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 27 July 2013 08:45

(Reuters(jW/irc)

Dublin Administrations print facility workers strike PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 27 July 2013 08:31

Workers at the printing facility of the Dublin Administration in the 26 Counties of Ireland went on strike last week as a result of a failure of management “to fully honour agreements entered into in good faith.”

The workers were told on July 16 that their core pay was being reduced without any prior discussion. The central issue has been a “unilateral decision by management to interpret our existing agreement in a new manner,” according to a statement from the workers. SIPTU Organiser Jane Boushell said in a statement, “We are engaged in discussions with management to try and resolve the issues at the centre of this dispute.” A source told TheJournal.ie that as the strike is technically “unofficial,” some of the workers believed that SIPTU was more concerned with having their name taken off any leaflets or releases related to the action than with any concern for the workers themselves.
